Course Design for Multidimensional Learning

For many teachers, the writing of a course syllabus is a burdensome task, with relatively little meaning. However, effective syllabi provide a basis for intentional learning-centred education, with parameters for mutual accountability between the instructor and the students. In this chapter you will be introduced to the notion of “backward design” of courses, and you will be guided step by step through the following process of course design for multidimensional learning:

Define the purpose of the course.

Establish long-term (deep learning) desired learning outcomes at the cognitive, affective and behavioural levels.

Create appropriate learning tasks that seek to measure the extent to which students have made progress towards the learning outcomes.

Design learning activities that will provide the students with the knowledge, skills and opportunities for holistic growth that are necessary to complete the learning tasks.

List relevant learning resources that the students can access to support their learning.

Provide mutual accountability elements, such as time allocations for work requested, class policies and teacher commitments.
